IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF THE ATMOSPHERIC AIR IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF BURGAS, THROUGH THE MODERNIZATION OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT

The overall goal of the project “Improvement of air quality in the Municipality of Burgas through modernization of public transport”, related to the modernization of the rolling stock of the municipal public transport company is to reduce air pollution with PM10 and NOx, reduce noise and vibration in urban environment.

The project is aimed at achieving the following specific objectives:
> Reducing the negative impact on the environment by replacing and modernizing the rolling stock of public transport in the Municipality of Burgas.
The project is in full compliance with the policies of the Municipality of Burgas on improving air quality, sustainable energy management and environmental protection. The implementation of the planned activities will achieve: reduction of pollution with fine dust particles and nitrogen oxides from a public transport source; establishing a model of urban mobility based on environmentally friendly vehicles and forming a new culture of sustainable urban mobility;
> Improving energy efficiency by diversifying fuels and energy in public transport.
Increasing energy independence and fuel diversification are part of the strategies of the Municipality of Burgas for more efficient public transport. The introduction of electric vehicles in the municipal transport system will lead to a reduction in fuel and energy costs and costs throughout the life cycle of vehicles;
> Improving the reliability, comfort and travel time by public transport in the Municipality of Burgas.

The new, modernly equipped electric buses will ensure greater safety and accessibility of the transport service, including for people with reduced mobility. The increased use of public transport at the expense of personal vehicles, the time saved, the reduced traffic and the improved state of the environment are a contribution to improving the quality of life of the population of the city and the municipality.

Basic activities:
¦ Project organization and management, information and communication;
¦ Delivery and commissioning of electric vehicles and additional equipment to them;
¦ Delivery, installation and commissioning of equipment for electronic ticket system, automatic positioning of vehicles, real-time passenger information system;
¦ Engineering (design, construction and author’s supervision) for construction of cable routes to charging stations for electric buses, complete transformer substations and connection to the electricity transmission network.

Status: implemented in the period November 9, 2019 / August 9, 2023.

Expected results:
v Concluded contract for delivery of 10 pcs. new 18 meter articulated and charging stations to them. After a procedure for selection of a supplier, a contract was concluded with the Spanish company Irizar, which envisages the delivery to be made by the beginning of 2022 and is worth BGN 15,542,000 without VAT;
v Concluded contract for delivery of 34 pcs. new 12-meter electric buses and charging stations to them. After a procedure for selection of a supplier, a contract was concluded with the Spanish company Irizar, which envisages the delivery to be carried out in the autumn of 2022 and is worth BGN 36,514,000, excluding VAT;
v Contract for supply of 12 new 9-meter electric buses and charging stations to them. The supplier selection procedure is underway.
v Concluded contract for the supply, installation and commissioning of equipment for electronic ticket system, automatic positioning of vehicles, real-time passenger information system, amounting to BGN 1,822,530.00 without. incl. VAT. The equipment has been delivered, the installation and commissioning is forthcoming, according to the delivery schedule of the electric buses.
